Having lost his musician father, Cliff, to cancer, Dan Barnett assembled two line-ups of players associated with his father or himself and paid homage the only way musicians know how.
The resultant album of standards is more celebration than requiem, with Barnett's sometimes-cruising, sometimes-chiselled voice and lithe trombone leading the way.
Emerging from retirement to lead one band was vibraphonist Pat Caplice, whose buoyant swing and pithy melodic ideas are a joy.
There's a sensational big band reading of I Remember Clifford, and some enchanting solos from pianist Peter Locke and the radiant guitar of Chuck Morgan, underpinned by bassist Ed Gaston and British drummer Cyril Bevan.
For the opening of the bossa nova If You Never Come To Me, Barnett briefly darkens his trombone tone so it becomes as poignant as a person with a lump in the throat. He then sings the lyric with pure, unadorned honesty.
All profits from the album's sale go to cancer research. It will be launched at the Paddington-Woollahra RSL on May 13.
